Who I Am
I’m Dominic, and I’ve lived in Colorado Springs for more than 20 years. This city has become home in the way places do when you’ve truly gotten to know them. I created this guide because I got tired of watching people miss what makes the Springs genuinely special, the real trails, the real neighborhoods, the real experience that no generic travel site captures.
I’m just a local. I’ve hiked these trails in every season, eaten in every corner of this city, and talked to people who know their neighborhoods like their own homes. Over two decades, I’ve learned where the crowds go and where the locals actually spend their time, and there’s a difference.
Springs Local Guide started as a simple mission: share the Colorado Springs I know. Not what’s trendy or Instagram-worthy, but what’s actually good. What’s actually worth your time.
Everything here comes from experience and real conversations. No affiliate spam. No clickbait. No “Top 10 Things” that miss the point. Just honest recommendations about a place I genuinely love.
Local Roots: Why You Can Trust This Guide
I’ve lived in Colorado Springs for more than 20 years. That means I’ve watched neighborhoods transform, discovered trails that stay off most maps, learned which seasons bring which challenges, and figured out the real traffic patterns that visitors rarely catch. This guide comes from that lived experience, the kind you only build by staying put through two decades of seasons, moves, and local changes.
What Firsthand Knowledge Actually Means
I know which neighborhoods work for quiet living and which ones hum with young families. I’ve hiked every season, when Garden of the Gods is frozen in January and when it’s packed in July. I navigate I-25 and the side streets during rush hour, construction, and winter snow. I’ve eaten at hundreds of local restaurants, walked the parks year-round, and learned where locals actually spend their time instead of where the guidebooks point.
This guide isn’t built on paid placements, sponsored content, or some curated list passed down from above. Every recommendation here comes from real experience, mine, and insights from the locals I’ve talked to over the years. If I recommend something, it’s because I’ve been there.
Honest, Specific, and Independent
You’ll notice this guide skips the generic highlights and focuses on what actually matters to someone living here, the neighborhoods worth exploring, the trails that match your fitness level, the restaurants where locals eat, and the seasonal rhythms that shape life in this town. Some spots are classics for good reason. Others are hidden because they’re neighborhood gems that haven’t been commercialized yet.
I share what I genuinely know. I’ve spent more than 20 years here and I’ve been to a lot of these places myself, and when I have, I’ll tell you what I really think. I haven’t been to every single spot in town, though, so some of what you’ll find here are the local favorites and highest-reviewed places that locals and honest reviews consistently point to. I’d rather be straight with you than pretend I’ve done it all.
What Makes Colorado Springs Awesome
Colorado Springs is the kind of place that never gets old. After years of living here, I still get that rush when I drive down through Garden of the Gods on my way into town, those red rocks catching the light, Pikes Peak rising up in the distance, and I realize how lucky we are to call this home.
Why We Love It Here
- Garden of the Gods. This 1,300-acre park is impossible to take for granted. Whether you’re hiking, biking, or just watching the sunset paint those red rocks gold, it’s cathedral-level beautiful.
- Pikes Peak & the Cog Railway. America’s Mountain is 14,115 feet of inspiration. The Cog Railway makes it accessible without the slog, I’ve taken visitors up dozens of times, and it never disappoints.
- Outdoor access year-round. With 300+ days of sunshine and the entire Front Range within an hour’s drive, you can hike, camp, or just sit outside in January without shivering. If you want a place to start, my roundup of the best hiking trails near Colorado Springs covers routes for every fitness level.
- Authentic neighborhoods with character. Manitou Springs has its quirky arts vibe, Old Colorado City is where the real character lives, galleries, historic shops, and local breweries, and downtown keeps getting better. I break down where you’d actually want to spend time in my guide to the best neighborhoods in Colorado Springs.
- Adventure within reach. North Cheyenne Cañon, Seven Falls, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to exploration.
It’s the combination that makes it special: the mountains, the people, the outdoor culture, and that reliable Colorado sunshine. There’s far more here than you can see in a weekend, browse my full guide to things to do in Colorado Springs, and when you’re ready to roam a little farther, there are plenty of day trips worth the drive to Cripple Creek, Woodland Park, and beyond. Whether you’re born here or you land here by accident, Colorado Springs has a way of getting into your bones.
Community & Mission
The Springs Local Guide exists for one reason: to help you feel at home in Colorado Springs, whether you’ve lived here your whole life, just moved to the area, or you’re visiting.
I built this site because I got tired of seeing newcomers and locals alike spend time and money on mediocre recommendations. You deserve the real local wisdom, the spots that matter, the hidden gems, the places where you can actually belong. This guide is my way of giving that back to our community.
Every post here is written from real experience, not marketing copy. I focus on what genuinely works for Colorado Springs residents and visitors: neighborhoods worth exploring, outdoor access that makes the area special, local businesses that get it right, and practical tips that save you time and frustration. My goal is to help you discover what makes the Pikes Peak region worth calling home.
