Quick Picks: Best Coffee Shop for What You Need
Short on time? Here is the fast answer by what you actually need, before the full neighborhood breakdown below. Every fact in this guide, address, hours, price, was checked on September 24, 2026.
- Best espresso: Loyal Coffee, downtown or Northgate. No gimmick drinks, just a properly pulled shot every time.
- Best downtown walk-up: Story Coffee Co, the tiny house in Acacia Park. Grab espresso and keep walking the downtown loop.
- Best for laptop work: Third Space Coffee on N Academy Blvd. Couches, a big meeting room, and real food if you are there for hours.
- Best pastry or bakery case: Carnelian Coffee on the west side. Scratch bakery and roastery in one, worth stopping for the case alone.
- Best after a hike or near Pikes Peak: Kairos Coffee House near the Air Force Academy. Stone fireplace, a patio with a real Pikes Peak view, quiet enough to sit a while.
- Best north side: Hold Fast Coffee Co at Montebello Square. Roasts on site, a genuinely smooth cold brew, easy parking.
- Best value: Solar Roast Coffee downtown. Solar-roasted coffee and a solid breakfast burrito, no frills, fair price.
I have lived here for two decades and I order coffee like other people check the weather, constantly, out of habit, and with strong opinions. I am a food-first person before I am a coffee person. I grew up around good Italian espresso and I hold pastries to that standard, so my picks lean toward places that get the fundamentals right, a properly pulled shot, something fresh to eat next to it, rather than the ones with the flashiest menu board. Below is the full breakdown by part of town, plus what I actually think is worth your money versus what’s just fine.
How I Put This List Together
This is a mix of what I know from actually living and drinking coffee here for 20-plus years, and what I checked directly against each shop’s own site, public listings, and recent press in September 2026 before publishing. Coffee shops close and change hands often, so I am labeling anything I have not personally been to recently as researched rather than pretending I have a favorite drink everywhere in town. To be specific about that split: my own repeat-visit picks are Loyal Coffee, Story Coffee Co, Third Space Coffee and Kairos Coffee House, the four I point people to above, marked Firsthand below. Every other shop on this list is marked Researched, checked live in September 2026 against that business’s own site where one exists (linked in its section below), or against public listings and named outside press where a site was thin or missing. One example of why that check matters: an older, well-loved downtown spot called The Perk Downtown shows up in a lot of “best of Colorado Springs coffee” roundups, including an earlier version of this page, but it closed for good in May 2024 after 16 years. It’s left off the list on purpose. I also added several shops this update that show up in other current local coffee roundups but were missing here before: Cinchona, Bird Tree, the Hold Fast Coffee Club at RECEPTION, Treehouse, Dynamo, Frankly and STIR are all open as of this check, and all researched, not firsthand. Two more, Forge Coffee Lab and Lake & Lantern, are technically in Monument and Palmer Lake rather than Colorado Springs proper, so I split those into their own section at the end instead of mixing them into the city neighborhoods.
Downtown Colorado Springs
Downtown is the easiest area to do a short coffee crawl on foot, and it’s where I send out-of-town guests first.
Solar Roast Coffee Researched
Solar Roast, at 134 N Tejon St, is a genuine local landmark, it’s the only coffee shop in town roasting its beans with an actual solar-powered roaster. Per the company’s own history, the founders built their first solar roaster in 2004 and opened their first retail shop in 2007, so the “solar-roasted since 2004” claim is theirs, not a guess on my part. The slower, lower-temperature roast gives the coffee a smoother, less bitter finish than a typical drum roaster. They also do a solid breakfast burrito and sell whole beans if you want to bring the roast home.
Address: 134 N Tejon St, downtown | Hours: roughly 7:30am-4pm Sun-Tue, 7:30am-5pm Wed, Thu & Sat, 7:30am-9pm Fri, per public listings (checked Sep 24, 2026, confirm same-day) | Price: typical Springs cafe range, the breakfast burrito adds real value | Best for: value, grab-and-go, whole beans to take home | Seating/parking: counter seating, metered street parking or nearby garages downtown | Site: solarroast.com
Story Coffee Co Firsthand
Story is a coffee shop built inside an actual tiny house, parked on the south side of Acacia Park in the middle of downtown. It’s been a local favorite long enough to get a mention in the Colorado Springs Chamber & EDC’s own roundup of local meeting spots. Seating is limited to a few outdoor tables, so most people grab espresso or a pour-over and keep walking, which fits perfectly if you’re already doing the downtown shops-and-food loop. It’s a novelty the first time and a genuinely good cup every time after. Story has since added a second location on the west side; my visits have all been to the original tiny house.
Address: 120 E Bijou St, the Acacia Park tiny house I go to; second location at 2752 W Colorado Ave | Hours: Mon-Fri 6am-5pm, Sat-Sun 7am-5pm, both locations (official site, checked Sep 24, 2026) | Price: typical Springs cafe range | Best for: downtown walk-up, a quick espresso between stops | Seating/parking: a few outdoor tables only, metered street parking nearby | Site: storycoffeecompany.com
Good Neighbors Meeting House Researched
A few blocks off the main downtown strip on Columbia St, Good Neighbors is more of a neighborhood breakfast-and-coffee spot than a pure cafe, think Belgian waffles, breakfast burritos and bowls, plus counter-service coffee. There’s a small back area selling local art and small-batch goods from area makers, which is a nice touch if you want to bring something home besides beans.
Address: 505 E Columbia St, downtown | Hours: daily 7am-5pm, happy hour pricing 3-5pm (official site, checked Sep 24, 2026) | Price: typical breakfast-cafe range, cheaper 3-5pm | Best for: breakfast plus coffee, browsing local goods | Seating/parking: indoor seating, metered street parking | Site: goodneighborsmeetinghouse.com
Cinchona Coffee Researched
Cinchona is the newest name on this downtown list, a single-origin coffee and matcha bar that Axios covered in May 2026 for its cocktail-like specialty drinks, standing-room vibe, and rotating tea program. It leans more specialty bar than sit-and-work cafe, orange chairs and a bike rack out front, per its own site, rather than a laptop setup.
Address: 2 S Wahsatch Ave, Suite 100, downtown | Hours: daily 6am-6pm (official site, checked Sep 24, 2026) | Price: coffee $6, espresso $5.50, latte/cappuccino $8, matcha $8, tea $6, $9.50 specialty drinks | Best for: single-origin coffee, matcha, a quick specialty drink | Seating/parking: mostly standing-room, metered street parking downtown | Site: cinchonacoffee.com
Bird Tree Cafe Researched
Bird Tree sits right across from Acacia Park and covers more ground than a straight coffee shop, all-day breakfast, a full bar, and a daily happy hour on top of the coffee counter. It’s a fair pick if part of your group wants coffee and part wants an espresso martini or a Bloody Mary, per its official menu.
Address: 218 N Tejon St, Suite 110, downtown, across from Acacia Park | Hours: daily 8am-6pm (public listing, checked Sep 24, 2026) | Price: happy hour 3-6pm, $6 Bloody Mary, $3.50 mimosa, $7 espresso martini; sandwiches $14-18 | Best for: coffee plus breakfast or a bar seat | Seating/parking: outdoor seating, metered street parking | Site: birdtreecafe.org
Old Colorado City and the West Side
West side cafes pair naturally with a walk through Old Colorado City’s shops and galleries, and a few of them lean into that neighborhood, artsy feel more than a straightforward coffee counter would.
Carnelian Coffee Researched
Carnelian, on W Colorado Ave, is a from-scratch bakery and roastery as much as it is a coffee shop, with a cozy, homey feel and local art on the walls. Worth stopping for the baked goods alone if you’re the type who judges a cafe by its pastry case, which, as noted, I am. It now has an official site, though it didn’t list current hours when I checked, so the hours below come from its public business listing instead.
Address: 2428 W Colorado Ave, Old Colorado City | Hours: Thu-Tue 8am-4pm, closed Wed (public listing, checked Sep 24, 2026) | Price: typical Springs cafe range, pastries and a vegan burrito on the menu | Best for: pastry case, scratch bakery | Seating/parking: indoor seating, free street parking on W Colorado Ave | Site: carneliancoffeeco.com
Jives Coffee Lounge Researched
Jives is the rare Colorado Springs coffee shop that’s also a real live-music venue. Per Jives’ own site, the lineup still runs an open mic Wednesday nights and Irish pub music on Thursdays, plus a stage that gets used regularly the rest of the week too. Good coffee, dog-friendly, and a genuinely different vibe from a standard work-and-laptop cafe.
Address: 16 Colbrunn Ct, Old Colorado City | Hours: daily 7am-9pm, Wed until 10pm for open mic (official site, checked Sep 24, 2026) | Price: typical Springs cafe range | Best for: live music, a dog-friendly hangout | Seating/parking: indoor seating and a stage, street parking | Site: jivescoffeelounge.com
Yellow Mountain Tea House Researched
Not coffee, technically, but it belongs on this list, Yellow Mountain is a Chinese tea house and dim sum spot on W Colorado Ave with gong fu tea ceremonies, loose-leaf tea service, and both regular and tatami-style seating. The Colorado Springs Gazette profiled it in July 2024, confirming the traditional tea-ceremony format and organic loose-leaf selection. If you’re coffee’d out or you’re bringing someone who doesn’t drink coffee, this is the answer.
Address: 2616 W Colorado Ave, Suite 21, Old Colorado City | Hours: daily 10am-9pm (public listing, checked Sep 24, 2026) | Price: tea service and dim sum, moderate | Best for: non-coffee drinkers, a slower tea ceremony | Seating/parking: regular and tatami-style seating, street parking | Site: no independently verified official site; see the Gazette profile above and public listings
Frankly Coffee Researched
Frankly is a small boutique espresso stop with a bigger personality than its footprint, tucked just off the main Old Colorado City strip. Indoor seating is limited, per local coverage, so the patio does most of the work in good weather.
Address: 727 1/2 W Colorado Ave, Old Colorado City | Hours: Mon-Fri 6:30am-3pm, Sat-Sun 7am-4pm (public listing, checked Sep 24, 2026) | Price: not published, typical Springs cafe range | Best for: quick espresso, a sunny or shaded patio | Seating/parking: very limited indoor seating, larger patio, street parking | Site: Facebook page, no separate official site found
North and Central Colorado Springs
This stretch, roughly Academy Boulevard up through the Air Force Academy area and Northgate, has the highest concentration of shops built for people who actually want to sit and work, not just grab a cup and go.
Loyal Coffee Firsthand
Loyal has two locations, downtown and up north near Northgate. It’s not just a local favorite, specialty-coffee trade site Sprudge profiled the original shop back in 2018 as “small in focus but grand in execution,” and it’s the same standard the current locations still hold. It’s the shop I point people to when they want one genuinely great, no-gimmicks espresso drink rather than a novelty flavor.
Address: 408 S Nevada Ave, downtown; 11550 Ridgeline Dr, Northgate | Hours: 6am-7pm daily, both locations (official site, checked Sep 24, 2026) | Price: typical Springs cafe range | Best for: straightforward, well-pulled espresso | Seating/parking: indoor seating at both, dedicated lot at Northgate | Site: loyalcoffee.co
Switchback Coffee Roasters Researched
Switchback, per their own site, runs a cafe near downtown at 330 N Institute St and a roastery and brew bar at 909 E Moreno Ave. They roast their own beans and work directly with source farms, and the Institute St location has that eclectic, neighborhood-coffeehouse feel rather than a polished retail build-out.
Address: Shooks Run cafe, 330 N Institute St; Roastery & Brew Bar, 909 E Moreno Ave | Hours: Shooks Run 6:30am-3pm daily; Roastery Mon-Fri 7am-1pm, weekends 7am-2pm (official site, checked Sep 24, 2026) | Price: typical Springs cafe range | Best for: neighborhood coffeehouse feel, source-farm roasting | Seating/parking: indoor seating at both, street parking | Site: switchbackroasters.com
Building Three Coffee Researched
Building Three occupies a room inside the old Lincoln Center building on N Cascade Ave, a former elementary school where each classroom is now a different small business and the old hallway is shared overflow seating. It’s a genuinely unusual space, and per Building Three’s own site, the shop was voted 2017 Best Roaster in Colorado Springs and has stuck around as a respected local micro-roaster for over a decade since.
Address: 2727 N Cascade Ave | Hours: Mon-Sat 6am-6pm, closed Sun (official site, checked Sep 24, 2026) | Price: typical Springs cafe range | Best for: a genuinely different building, micro-roasted coffee | Seating/parking: shared hallway overflow seating, lot parking at the building | Site: building3coffee.com
Kairos Coffee House Firsthand
Kairos, tucked up near the Air Force Academy on Popes Bluff Trail, is run under the nonprofit YWAM and has a big double-sided stone fireplace plus a patio with a real Pikes Peak view. It’s one of the better spots in town for a long, quiet work session, and a natural stop if you’re headed toward Pikes Peak or the Academy visitor areas for the day.
Address: 505 Popes Bluff Trail | Hours: Mon-Fri 7am-5pm, Sat 8am-5pm, closed Sun (official site, checked Sep 24, 2026) | Price: typical Springs cafe range | Best for: long work sessions, a post-hike or post-Peak stop | Seating/parking: fireplace lounge and patio, on-site lot | Site: kairoscoffeehouse.com
Wayfinder Coffee Co Researched
Wayfinder, near UCCS, has built a loyal following for well-made espresso drinks and a genuinely welcoming, community-first feel, it’s popular with students and regulars alike rather than being purely a drive-through stop.
Address: 6140 Austin Bluffs Pkwy, Suite 150 | Hours: Mon-Tue 6:30am-6pm, Wed-Fri 6:30am-9pm, Sat-Sun 8am-6pm (official site, checked Sep 24, 2026) | Price: typical Springs cafe range | Best for: students, evening hours most nights | Seating/parking: indoor seating, shopping-center lot | Site: wayfindercoffee.com
Third Space Coffee Firsthand
Third Space, on N Academy Blvd, is a roastery, cafe and event space in one, with couches, a large meeting room available for groups, and a food menu that goes further than most local cafes, quiche, paninis, avocado toast, and breakfast burritos alongside the coffee and pour-overs.
Address: 5670 N Academy Blvd | Hours: Mon-Sat 7am-6pm, Sun 8am-5pm (public listing, checked Sep 24, 2026, confirm same-day) | Price: typical Springs cafe range, food menu priced like a light lunch spot | Best for: laptop work, groups, a real meal with your coffee | Seating/parking: couches and a large meeting room, lot parking | Site: thirdspacecoffee.com
Hold Fast Coffee Co Researched
Hold Fast, at Montebello Square near Chapel Hills, roasts on-site and is known locally for a genuinely smooth cold brew. If you like your coffee cold and strong rather than hot and delicate, this is the one to try first.
Address: 2360 Montebello Square Dr, Suite H1 | Hours: Mon-Sat 6:30am-5pm, Sun 8am-4pm (official site, checked Sep 24, 2026) | Price: typical Springs cafe range, bagel sandwiches and pastries on the menu | Best for: cold brew, north-side errands | Seating/parking: indoor seating, shopping-center lot | Site: holdfastcoffeeco.com
Hold Fast Coffee Club at RECEPTION Researched
Same Montebello Square block as Hold Fast Coffee Co above, but a different concept. RECEPTION is an evening cocktail and food bar, and on weekend mornings it runs as the Hold Fast Coffee Club, a slow-bar pour-over program with roastery-exclusive coffees you won’t find at the main cafe. Daily Coffee News covered the concept in March 2026.
Address: Montebello Square Dr, the RECEPTION space | Hours: Coffee Club Fri-Sun 8am-2pm; RECEPTION cocktail service Thu-Sat 4-9pm (official Hold Fast locations page, checked Sep 24, 2026) | Price: not published for coffee service | Best for: slow-bar pour-overs, an evening drink later the same day | Seating/parking: bar and lounge seating, shopping-center lot | Site: receptioncos.com
Treehouse Cafe COS Researched
Treehouse leans wellness, a seasonal menu of artisanal coffee, teas, salads and bowls, on the north end of Academy Blvd. What sets it apart for practical purposes is a rentable networking room for up to 15 people, a real answer if you need somewhere other than a coffee-shop table for a small meeting.
Address: 5965 N Academy Blvd, Suite 203 | Hours: Mon-Fri 7:30am-4pm, Sat-Sun 9am-4pm (official site, checked Sep 24, 2026) | Price: not published; networking room $25/hour | Best for: small meetings, a wellness-leaning food menu | Seating/parking: cafe seating plus a bookable room, lot parking | Site: treehousecafecos.com
Dynamo Coffee Roasting Researched
Dynamo is a small-batch roaster on the east side that explicitly invites people to bring a laptop, write, or just use the space as a community hangout, per its own site. It’s a fair option if you’re on that side of town and don’t want to drive back toward Academy or downtown for a decent laptop-friendly cafe.
Address: 4029 Tutt Blvd | Hours: Sun, Mon & Wed-Sat 7am-4pm, closed Tue (official site, checked Sep 24, 2026) | Price: not published, typical Springs cafe range | Best for: east-side laptop work, a community space | Seating/parking: laptop-friendly seating, lot parking | Site: dynamocoffeeroasting.com
STIR Coffee & Cocktails Researched
STIR is a neighborhood coffee-and-cocktail bar in the Old North End with a scratch kitchen and hours that run well past a normal cafe’s, useful if you want a coffee drink in the evening instead of during the standard morning rush. The menu names a few signature coffee cocktails: Inthanon, a Thai-style iced coffee with condensed milk and cardamom, El Toro, a mocha with cayenne and cinnamon, and Appalachian, espresso with brown sugar and cinnamon.
Address: 2330 N Wahsatch Ave, Old North End | Hours: Sun-Tue 9am-9pm, Wed-Sat 9am-10pm (official site, checked Sep 24, 2026) | Price: oat/almond milk +$1, flavors +$0.50 | Best for: evening coffee, a coffee cocktail | Seating/parking: bar seating and a dog-friendly patio, street parking | Site: stircoffeeandcocktails.com
Worth the Drive: Tri-Lakes Coffee Stops (Researched)
These two are technically in Monument and Palmer Lake, not Colorado Springs proper, but they show up in enough current coffee roundups for the wider metro area that they’re worth knowing about if you’re headed north on I-25 or out toward the Palmer Lake trails.
Forge Coffee Lab Researched
Forge is a Monument roaster with a high-end brewing focus, house-made syrups, chai and almond milk, per its own site, plus Provision pastries and gluten-free options.
Address: 15954 Jackson Creek Pkwy D, Monument | Hours: closed Mon, Tue-Sat 6am-2pm, Sun 7am-2pm (official site, checked Sep 24, 2026) | Price: not published, typical range for the area | Best for: a Tri-Lakes stop, house-made syrups | Seating/parking: not verified, lot parking typical for the strip | Site: forgecoffeelab.com
Lake & Lantern Cafe Researched
Lake & Lantern sits right on Palmer Lake with a breakfast-and-lunch menu plus artisan coffee, teas, smoothies and zero-proof beers, wines and mocktails. A good stop if you’re doing the Palmer Lake reservoir trails and want food along with the coffee.
Address: 84-2 CO-105, Suite 2, Palmer Lake | Hours: Mon, Thu & Fri 6:30am-2pm, Sat-Sun 8am-2pm, closed Tue-Wed, public listings vary slightly so confirm same-day (checked Sep 24, 2026) | Price: not published, breakfast-lunch cafe range | Best for: post-trail food and coffee near the lake | Seating/parking: cafe seating, lot parking | Site: lakeandlantern.com
Good to Know Before You Go
A few practical notes since this is the kind of list where details go stale fast: hours shift seasonally at almost every independent shop on this list, so check the shop’s own site or Google listing the same day if you’re making a special trip, I’ve flagged the couple of spots above where public listings disagreed with each other. Where I couldn’t find a published price, expect the same normal range as anywhere else in town for a latte or drip coffee, roughly $4-6 for drip and $5-7 for a standard espresso drink as of this September 2026 check. Parking downtown (Solar Roast, Story, Good Neighbors, Cinchona, Bird Tree) means metered street parking or the nearby garages, budget a few extra minutes on weekend mornings. Most north-side and west-side shops have their own lot or free street parking. If a shop you loved from an older roundup isn’t here, like The Perk Downtown, it’s worth double-checking it’s still open before you drive across town for it. And if you’re planning a full morning out, pair a coffee stop with actual food, our breakfast guide and dining guide cover the rest of the day.
Coffee crawl base
Downtown shops stack well with a walking overnight. West-side cafes pair with Old Colorado City and Manitou.
