Short answer: drive up, ski, and sleep in your own bed at Monarch or Ski Cooper on US-24. Want bigger terrain at Breckenridge, Keystone, Arapahoe Basin, Copper, or Vail? Plan on staying over. Those mean routing north to I-70 or over Hoosier Pass, a drive you don’t want to repeat twice in one weekend. Pick by how much drive you can stand, not by which brochure lists the most acres.
- Tight on time or budget: Monarch or Ski Cooper, home for dinner.
- Want a real town at the base: Breckenridge.
- Want to ski after dark: Keystone’s night skiing.
- Serious skier, no polish needed: Arapahoe Basin.
- Mixed-ability group: Copper Mountain, split up and meet at the lift.
- Bucket-list splurge: Vail.

The drive is half the decision. Monarch and Cooper run up US-24 over Ute Pass and Wilkerson Pass into the Arkansas valley, a two-lane road that behaves if your tires are decent. Breck, Keystone, A-Basin, Copper, and Vail mean driving north to I-70 first, onto the stretch covered by Colorado’s traction law, September 1 through May 31, per CDOT’s traction law page. CDOT can switch the law on for US-24 too in bad weather, so check COtrip.org first. Colorado Springs sits around 6,035 feet; most of these resorts base above 9,000, so give yourself a day to adjust, especially with kids or a heart or lung condition. VisitCOS’s ski page covers the same ground.
Day trip range: Monarch and Ski Cooper
Close enough to leave before sunrise, ski a full day, and be home without a hotel bill. Both run along the US-24/US-285 corridor through the Arkansas valley, calmer than I-70 when weather turns.

Twenty years on the west side of the Springs means I’ve made this drive plenty, out toward Buena Vista and Salida along the Arkansas, canyon photos included from a trip that way this past July. Easier than people expect, mostly two-lane and well kept outside of a storm.
Monarch Mountain
About 123 miles, 2.5 hours, via US-24 through Woodland Park and Buena Vista. Natural snow only, no snowmaking, and the one I’d point a budget-minded family toward first. Around 800 skiable acres today; InTheSnow’s 2026/27 guide has Monarch working on a No Name Basin expansion, roughly 377 more acres of intermediate and advanced terrain, so check the trail map before you drive up. Want a weekend instead? Salida has lodging near the base (link further down). Conditions and ticket prices at the Monarch Mountain official site.

Ski Cooper
About 147 miles, roughly 3 hours, near Leadville, same US-24 corridor before cutting north. Small area, gentle terrain, tickets well under Summit County prices. Good for beginners and families teaching kids to ski, no attitude, no lift line. Hours and rates at the Ski Cooper official site.
Overnight territory: the Summit County cluster and Breck
These sit off I-70 west of Denver, or over Hoosier Pass on CO-9 for Breck, routing through Denver traffic on top of distance. A bad idea on a powder weekend when I-70 backs up for hours. Book a room and make it two days.
Breckenridge
About 107 miles, 2.5 hours. Breck has close to 2,900 skiable acres across five peaks and an actual town at the base, not just a lodge, with the most terrain variety on this list. Lodging books up fast on weekends (search link below). Trail status and passes at the Breckenridge official site.
Keystone
About 2.5 hours. Keystone runs night skiing later than most Colorado resorts, the pick for more hours on snow per trip, and families get Kidtopia programs. Hours and tickets at the Keystone official site, lodging search below if staying over.
Arapahoe Basin (A-Basin)
About 2.5 hours. One of the longest seasons in the state, sometimes into June, no village scene, just lifts and terrain. Good for advanced skiers who want steep runs like the East Wall, not après-ski polish. Conditions at the A-Basin official site.

Copper Mountain and Vail
Copper is about 2.5 hours, Vail about 3. Copper’s terrain splits naturally by difficulty, so mixed groups can split up and meet back at the lift. Vail is the splurge, over 5,300 acres with the famous back bowls, priced like it. Breckenridge, Keystone, and Vail run on the Epic Pass; Copper is an Ikon partner; A-Basin sells its own pass with limited Ikon access. Passes at the Copper Mountain official site or the Vail official site.
Going north through Denver instead of west? Eldora, Loveland, and Winter Park are the closer I-70/US-40 day-trip options Uncover Colorado lists, same traffic trade-off.
Don’t want to drive: the shuttle option
Per Rocky Mountain Ride’s own site, shared shuttles run from the Springs, pickup around 6:30am, return around 3pm, to Monarch, Breckenridge, Keystone, and A-Basin. Gear rides free. The Gazette’s November 2024 coverage put shared seats around $69 one way, via US-24 to skip I-70. Private shuttles reach Cooper, Copper, and Vail too. Confirm pricing and pickup points before booking.
Book the mountain overnight
Day trips work for Monarch and Cooper. For Breck, Keystone, A-Basin, Copper, or Vail, book a room at the base and skip the drive home after dark.
Cold hands and cold feet ruin a ski day faster than bad snow. A few cheap things help at altitude:
Ski-day add-ons
Bottom line
Deciding this week with no overnight bag? Monarch or Cooper get you home the same night. Want bigger terrain at Breck, Keystone, or Vail? Book a room instead of fighting I-70 both ways in one day. Either way, check the resort’s own site the morning you go. Snow and road conditions change fast enough that anything here is a starting point, not the last word.
