Looking for free things to do in Colorado Springs? Start with Garden of the Gods. The park and the Visitor Center museum are free forever. Rock Ledge Ranch grounds next door are free dawn to dusk. Add Red Rock Canyon, Helen Hunt Falls, Palmer Park, the Pioneers Museum downtown, and a walk through Old Colorado City when you want more. This is a local shortlist of free spots worth your time, not a padded countdown of fifty thin bullets.
Pick by half a day:
- West side rocks: Garden of the Gods plus the free museum; Red Rock Canyon if the main lots are full.
- Downtown: Pioneers Museum, then America the Beautiful Park.
- On foot: Old Colorado City, then the Penny Arcade in Manitou.
- Trail legs: Helen Hunt Falls and North Cheyenne Cañon, or Ute Valley for fewer crowds.

Garden of the Gods timing and the free museum

Deeded to the city in 1909 so it stays free forever, Garden of the Gods is a city park and National Natural Landmark. Per gardenofgods.com, park hours are 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. May 1 through October 31, and 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. November through April. The Visitor & Nature Center at 1805 N 30th Street is the free museum: exhibits and a trail map at no charge, generally 9 to 6 in summer and 9 to 5 in winter, closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day.
My rule, from a timing tip I shared June 24, 2026: skip a perfect summer weekend if you can. Go weekday, first thing in the morning, or evening. On July 16, 2026 I also noted the paved e-bike path stays separated from cars, and Rampart Range Road out of the park is a dirt road with views you do not get from the main loop. Everything else at the park is free except food, e-bike or horse rentals, and the paid Geo-Trekker movie. Lot details: free parking at Garden of the Gods and the complete Garden of the Gods guide. For the Rampart climb itself, see Rampart Range Road.
Free days still need a base
A hotel near the west side saves the back-and-forth if you are stacking free mornings.

Rock Ledge Ranch and the free west side
Rock Ledge Ranch next door is one of my favorite day stops, something I said back on July 15, 2026: historical home, working farm, small pond, blacksmith and teepee when living history is running. Per rockledgeranch.com, the grounds are free every day from dawn to dusk. The living-history program runs early June through mid-August and is ticketed. When that program is closed, the Gateway Road gate is often closed too; use Pike Drive or Chambers Way on the south end and pick up a self-guided map at the restrooms.
Red Rock Canyon Open Space off Highway 24 is free city open space per coloradosprings.gov (3550 W High Street). No admission. Climbing needs a permit, and fires are banned. Ute Valley Park on the west side is a free city park I like for mountain biking, with trailhead parking off Vindicator Drive and fewer tourists than the Garden loop. E-bike route ideas: e-biking Colorado Springs.

Falls, canyons, and free city parks
Helen Hunt Falls and North Cheyenne Cañon Park on the south side are free city park access, with Starsmore Discovery Center as the usual trailhead. Palmer Park on the northeast side is another free city park with miles of trail and strong plains views. Downtown, America the Beautiful Park is free to walk around the Julie Penrose Fountain sculpture; per the city’s parks spray-grounds page, fountain water is not running under 2026 budget adjustments, so treat it as a sculpture stop, not a splash pad.
Downtown museum, Old Colorado City, and Manitou

The Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum at 215 S Tejon Street is always free admission per cspm.org, open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Old Colorado City near 24th and Colorado Avenue costs nothing to walk and pairs easily with Garden of the Gods a few minutes away. The Penny Arcade in Manitou is free to walk in; the machines take quarters. I go a couple times a year for the pinball nostalgia. I also walk the Broadmoor grounds when I am not staying there: flowers, the lake, the golf course right there. Nobody checks whether you are a guest.
Free-day bag (still costs gas)
Bottom line
One free morning: Garden of the Gods at a quiet hour, with a stop in the Visitor Center museum. Pair it with Rock Ledge Ranch or Old Colorado City since they sit minutes apart. Save the canyons and Pioneers Museum for a second half-day. Gas, food, and a short list of paid extras are the only money you have to spend. Longer drives like Royal Gorge belong on the day trips guide, not this free list. Scenic loops: scenic drives near Colorado Springs.
